Ordering and Shipping Information

Note I will ship Within Canada Only.

The Mail Order can work a couple of ways --

1. the traditional: order by mail, receive by mail; or
2. order by mail for pickup at the nursery. This involves prepayment but allows you to get your oar in early, and is also the only way to pre-order plants that I can’t ship due to size or that have to wait for dormancy before bothering their roots (for example, peonies); such plants are noted with their description in the Addendum. And of course shipping is ‘free’ when you pick up your order.
   

Mail order also allows you to acquire some plants that are not potted but are growing in nursery beds (still, after year upon year of not getting to the top of the list of things to pot!). I can then take the time to dig these plants on order and ship them out or pot them for pickup, without feeling rushed or pressured by people on the grounds (tree roots have been known to get in the way).

To Order by Mail, please print off copies of the Order Form (link below). Note that there are 3 "delivery groupings" and use a separate order form for each:

• plants to be shipped to you this spring by post (MINIMUM 4 plants-- this is a shipping cost thing-- you may actually order less than 4 plants but must pay shipping for 4);
• plants to be held at the nursery for you to pick up (please don't set a date more than 3 weeks away, as I have limited suitable space for holding reserved plants) (no minimum)
• plants which are to be shipped to you in fall (no minimum)

Enclose a cheque for the total amount of all order forms with your order or separate cheques for each order form, and send them to the address shown on the order form. I am not able to take credit card payment for mail-order.

Packaging:

• Spring shipments will be de-potted, have the loose dirt removed from their roots, and the roots will be wrapped in moist shredded newspaper, then in dry sheets of newspaper around the whole plant, and then placed in a plastic bag and finally in a box. The plant label will be in the paper sheeting - be sure to look for it when unwrapping. This has proven to deliver plants in good condition even over more than a week in transit.
• Fall shipments will be essentially bare-root if dormant, and either packaged as above or without any extra moisture as is appropriate for the item (eg peonies will not be moistened). Starting in fall of 2006 I am sending species peonies with a bit of dirt attached rather than bareroot, as this seems to allow them a quicker adaptation to the new home.

Spring shipments will be in the mail the day after packaging, which should normally be early in the week following receipt of the order. I will if possible time shipments so they should not spend a weekend in transit. However, these plants are outside unsheltered from the winter, so there will be no packaging or shipping until the rootballs have thawed enough to handle! Plants will still be essentially dormant or just starting to make growth until about May and into June for some. They are perfectly acclimatized for outdoor planting on receipt, no hardening off or protecting required.

All Applicable Taxes are Included in the Prices of Plants and Shipping.

Shipping and Handling Charges (2009): Handling charges included in the list price. Spring shipping is charged at $3.25 per plant. Fall shipping of bareroot plants
is $13 per order (any number of plants). If actual shipping and packing cost is less, a refund cheque for the extra postage will be sent off to you. It's all a bit of a guess, since weight may vary between plants.

Of course, plants ordered for pick-up at the nursery have no shipping or handling charges.
