Epimedium x rubrum 1005 $8.00

... Common names: Red Epimedium; Barrenwort; Bishop's Hat. A low perennial, hardy to USDA Zone 4 or colder. LOW MAINTENANCE. Of Upright habit, colonizing mainly by moderately creeping rootstocks. Of very long lifespan. Height: to 8-12in, and 1ft wide. Excellent semi-evergreen foliage plant for shady woods. Showiest variety especially as groundcover. Hybrid between E grandiflorum and E alpinum. Recommended site: part shade to sun. Soil: fertile, peaty, largely organic, well-drained, moist to dry-ish. Tolerant of conditions but keep moist in sun. Does well at bases of trees. Dense, compact foliage, deep green; coarse. Where leaves are evergreen (which is definitely not here!), cut back old foliage in spring to admire new and show flowers. New leaves red, also red when old but in my plants not to the degree expected at either time. Maybe it depends on the soil and exposure? Small flowers are borne on a Raceme in early spring. Flower colour: vivid crimson red, with yellow and white markings. Cup-shaped with long spurs, on a gracefully arching thin stem. Some uses: Edgings, in Shrubbery, Foliage, Groundcover, Mass Planting, Rock Gardens, Steep Banks, Naturalizing Woodlands.

Epimedium x versicolor cv 'Sulphareum' 1253A $8.00

... Common names: Bicolor Barrenwort; Persian Epimedium. A low to mid-height perennial, hardy to USDA Zone 4. LOW MAINTENANCE. Of Upright habit, colonizing mainly by slowly creeping rootstocks. Slow-growing and of very long lifespan. Height: to 1-1.5ft, and 1.5ft wide. Hybrid between E grandiflorum and E pinnatum ssp colchicum. This is an attractive little plant in all ways. A note on the cultivar name: it may not be correct although it seems to match the description. The problem is that I recieved this and a few other yellow-flowered cultivars from a former supplier who turned out to have a labelling problem, and I've been hard-pressed to find differences between the various supposed cultivars! Recommended site: sun or shade. Soil: fertile, peaty, largely organic loam, reliably moist but well-drained. Tolerates dryness in shade. OK in deep shade? Dense, compact foliage, deep green; of fine texture. Shiny attractive compound leaves to 1ft long. Pinkish tinge in autumn (not noted here though). Attempts to be evergreen but there is usually a short period after snow melt when the old leaves dry up before the new emerge, here. Small 2-tone yellow flowers are borne on a short Raceme in early spring. Like tiny daffodils in shape. Leafy flower stems. Some uses: Borders and Beds, Edgings, in Shrubbery, Foliage, Groundcover, Mass Planting, Rock Gardens, Steep Banks, Naturalizing Woodlands.

Eryngium planum 0469 $6.00

... Common names: Flat Sea Holly. A mid-height to tall perennial, hardy to USDA Zone 3. LOW MAINTENANCE. Of Branching habit, colonizing mainly by forming a very tight clump. Vigorous, fast-growing and of very long lifespan. Height: to 3ft+ Native to Europe: Germany/ Austria/ Russia/ Caucasus; and C Asia. Best of small-flowered types. Bold but not coarse; somewhat extraterrestrial in appearance. More branching than other species. This is one of those plants which looks much better in person than in photos. Self-seeding for me. Perhaps the easiest and most reliable sea holly in the NS climate. Recommended site: sun. Soil: infertile to poor, sandy loam, well-drained and dry-ish. Naturally occuring in dry places, roadsides, and rocky slopes. Once established resents disturbance; long taproot. Grows wonderfully in average garden soil, but tends to flop over because of over-feeding, unless staked. Reportedly does well in water-logged clay too! Foliage coarse. Tiny steely blue flowers are borne in small Globose heads for 2 months in late summer; free-flowering. Spectacular steely blue spiny bracts give most of the character and colour. Flower stems also metallic blue for a good length. Some uses: Borders and Beds, Specimens, Rock Gardens, Cut Flowers, Dried Flowers.

Moderately quick-growing and of very long lifespan. Height: to 6'+, and 8' wide. Native to Japan, Korea, NE China, E Siberia. Horizontal fan-shaped branching. Flat-topped, usually wider than high; can reach to 10'h x 15'. Invaluable autumn foliage tree. Plants from 2000, they'll be approaching 1 foot tall in 2003 and this will be their last year in the 1 gallon size (price will increase when repotted). Recommended site: sun to part shade. Soil: most any, reliably moist but well-drained. Naturally occurring in scrub and woods in lowlands and mountains. Easily grown. Fall colour better in sun. Foliage deep green. Narrow ovalish leaves to 3". Brilliant and unique uniform red foliage in fall (except in the coastal BC: too warm!). Deciduous. Twigs and branches have corky wings up to 1/2" wide (usually 4 but 2 in some variants). Tiny flowers are borne as individuals for a few weeks in late spring. Flower colour: creamy shades of green. Insignificant. Seed bright orange, displayed when capsules open in late fall, Although small and carried individually, make a nice spangly show after leaf-drop and through much of the winter. Sets a lot of seed but it germinates rarely, here. Some uses: Borders and Beds, in Shrubbery, Specimens, Foliage, Foundation plantings, Screen or Hedge or Windbreak, Berries or Fruit.
