Meadow Rues: I've never met a Thalictrum I didn't like, although my selection is getting pretty small...

... Common names: Columbine Meadow Rue. A mid-height to tall perennial, hardy to zone 3. LOW MAINTENANCE. Of Upright habit, colonizing mainly by slowly creeping rootstocks. Slow-growing and of long lifespan. Height: to 2-3'+, and 1˝' wide. Native to Europe: France/ Spain/ W Russia/ Romania/ Turkey (where they are rare). Graceful, elegant. Height to 4˝' in some conditions. This is one of the better ones for non-white colour. Every garden needs one... No problems with the benchmark winters, in any of several positions. Recommended site: sun to part shade. Soil: good, loamy, moist or boggy to wet. Naturally occurring in meadows, often in the mountains, and on shady rocks. Wide range of conditions. Reportedly not needing drainage (I have no first-hand bog experience...). May be sited in full sun if the soil is kept moist. Fibrous roots. Foliage of fine texture. Small flowers are borne as a large Panicle for a few weeks in late spring. Flower colour: shades of pink, sometimes darker into shades of purple to violet and sometimes white. Airy petal-less flowers with prominent upright coloured stamens; lacy/ puffy effect; panicles to 6-8" wide. Some uses: Borders and Beds, Specimens, Mass Planting, Boggy areas, Waterside, Cut Flowers, Naturalizing, Naturalizing Meadows. Better effect in small groups than singly.
