Slow-growing and of long lifespan. Height: to 2-3'+, and 1˝' wide. Native to Europe: France/ Spain/ W Russia/ Romania/ Turkey (where they are rare). Graceful, elegant. Recommended site: sun to part shade. Soil: good, loamy, moist or boggy to wet. Naturally occurring in meadows, often in the mountains, and on shady rocks. Wide range of conditions. Reportedly not needing drainage (I have no first-hand bog experience...). May be sited in full sun if the soil is kept moist. Fibrous roots. Foliage of fine texture. (ship in fall only; on-site anytime)(these are grown from seed, with 2 or sometimes 3 tubers per pot, one larger and close to flowering size, the other(s) smaller and a year or 2 from flowering; they're all from the same seed batch but they were crowded and some seedlings got less light than others)... Of Upright habit, colonizing mainly by seeding about. Slow-growing and of moderate lifespan. Height: to 2', and 3-8" wide. Soil: acidic peaty, largely organic, reliably moist but well-drained. Naturally occurs on rich hardwood slopes. May be browsed by deer, and some other critters have a fondness for the flower. Open, sparse foliage. Good-sized unpleasantly scented flowers are borne as individuals for a few weeks in early spring. Flower colour: purple-ish red. 3-petalled. Velvety texture. An attractive flower. No discernable stink, to my nose at least! Flowers are borne on a short stem (pedicel) above the leafs and tend to nod so they face horizontally. There is a white-flowered form.
